Panic has issued a full refund of the tariff fees it charged Playdate owners. The company confirmed on its official tariff note that “on August 25, 2026, we refunded all tariffs charged to customers.”

The Playdate tariff refund closes out a long dispute over U.S. import fees. Initially, the surcharge came from a tariff regime that added 19% to every console sold in the country. Rather than absorb that cost, Panic passed it along at checkout.
How the 19 percent fee started
Panic’s help page traces the surcharge to tariffs paid on each Playdate it manufactured. Then, on February 20, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated many U.S. tariffs. That included the 19% tariff Panic had been paying for every Playdate.
However, the ruling did not erase the cost overnight. As Panic explained, it had already paid tariffs on the Playdates in its warehouse. At the time, there was no way to recover that money. So the company kept charging a 19% surcharge on inventory. Meanwhile, it noted the fee could drop from 19% to 15% once a separate tariff took effect.
Why Panic passed the cost along
The maker of the Playdate handheld console said its margin on the device is low. Moreover, manufacturing electronics as a small company is expensive, particularly with materials like stainless steel, glass, and a high-resolution screen.

The refund lands as other hardware makers have fought tariff-driven price increases. Sony’s PlayStation price hike drew a tariff class action, and Nintendo raised Switch 2 prices as component costs climbed. Instead of keeping the recovered money, Panic gave it back to owners.
“Our deepest dream is that we can delete this line item, and this page, entirely, someday soon,” Panic wrote in February. Now, with the Playdate tariff refund issued on August 25, that line item is gone from new orders – and from customers’ pockets too.
